Care & Maintenance of Hardwood Flooring

Shaw Hardwood products, with their DuraShield finish, provide superior wear; easy, no-wax care; plus superior resistance to staining from all common household products such as coffee, shoe polish, lipstick, acetone, mustard, and more. A few simple maintenance steps, however, will help protect your investment and keep your Shaw Hardwood flooring looking like new.

Hardwood floors are one of the best investments you can make in your home, and like most good things, they reward a little attention. The great news is that keeping your Shaw Hardwood looking its best does not require much. A consistent routine goes a long way.

Sweep and Vacuum Regularly

Dirt, dust, and grit are the quiet enemies of hardwood floors. Over time, small particles act like sandpaper underfoot and can dull even the toughest finish. Sweeping with a soft-bristle broom or running a vacuum on the hardwood setting a few times a week keeps that from happening. It is one of the simplest things you can do and one of the most effective.

Clean Up Spills Right Away

Even with the DuraShield finish protecting against stains, sitting moisture is never a friend to wood floors. When something spills, wipe it up quickly with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not let liquid pool or sit, and avoid soaking the floor when mopping. A lightly dampened mop is all you need for routine cleaning.

Use the Right Products

Not all floor cleaners are created equal, and some can actually do more harm than good on hardwood. Avoid anything oil-based, wax-based, or overly harsh. Shaw makes cleaning products specifically designed for their floors, and using those will keep your finish in the best shape over time. When in doubt, less is more.

Protect High Traffic Areas

Rugs and mats near entryways, in hallways, and under furniture legs can make a big difference in how your floor holds up over the years. Felt pads under chair and table legs are a small investment that prevents scratches and scuffs from adding up. If you have pets, keeping their nails trimmed helps too.

Mind the Environment

Wood is a natural material and it responds to its environment. Extreme swings in humidity and temperature can cause hardwood to expand, contract, or even warp over time. Keeping your home at a relatively consistent humidity level, especially during dry winter months, helps your floors stay stable and look their best season after season.
